One of Judy Collins' most beloved albums, 1970's WHALES AND NIGHTINGALES is best known for its final song, a live choral rendition of "Amazing Grace" which was an unexpected hit. The simple but effective use of this hymn closes an album which subtly but effectively uses the protest song tradition in a considerably less didactic way than usual.

Stripping the glutinous self-approbation from Joan Baez's dippy "Song for David," Collins transforms the song into something more universal. Similarly, Brendan Behan's "The Patriot Game" is recast into a new, less distinctively Irish form, which also universalizes the song's theme away from the Irish situation. An acapella reading of the traditional "Farewell to Tarwathie," accompanied by whale song, is also particularly lovely, as are Collins' two Jacques Brel tunes, "Sons Of," and "Marieke." WHALES AND NIGHTINGALES is simply spellbinding.
