Review

Dirty Linen (4/04, p.61) - "Interestingly, about half the music seems quite unified in feeling despite widely varying instrumentation from track to track, sounding like different kinds of very folky calypso."

Title Note

Audio Remasterer: Robert C. Ludwig.

Liner Note Authors: Dan Sheehy; Krister Malm.

Recording information: Dominica (1969-1971); Grenada (1969-1971); Guadeloupe (1969-1971); Lesser Antilles (1969-1971); St. Lucia (1969-1971); St. Vincent (1969-1971); Tobago (1969-1971); Trinidad (1969-1971); Young Island (1969-1971).

Director: Keith Holzman.

Editor: Krister Malm.

The title is a bit misleading, since the pieces here aren't necessarily connected with carnival; instead, they're a celebration of the different cultures around the Caribbean. Unsurprisingly, there's a fair bit in Spanish, although "Aguinaldo," from the predominantly English-speaking island of Trinidad, might be a bit of a shock. However, the island's proximity to Venezuela has brought a strong Spanish element into the tongue. Inevitably, the rhythms are very African, as on the first two tracks here. Religion comes in with "Spiritual Baptists," a reminder that Christianity is a very important factor across the Caribbean. "The Story of Marrdevirain" highlights the tradition of immigrants from India who arrived during the 19th century, and "Reel" is a version of a Scottish tune dressed up in an African rhythm and loosened up, although many ears might have a problem discovering the original tune. The same is true for the song "Mr. Walker," here played on a pair of cocoa lutes. Regardless, it's a fabulous, varied listen, and also important in the way it highlights various aspects and traditions in island music. ~ Chris Nickson

A good overview of traditional music of the eastern Caribbean, this excellent CD was recorded between 1969 and 1971. It contains one or more selections from Dominica (merengue), St. Lucia (a song from the La Rose societies and masouc [aka mazurka]), the Grenadines (calypso played on the tamboo bamboo), Grenada (calypsos), Trinidad (parang, shango, Spiritual Baptist, Marrdevirain -- a Hindu epic and Tassa drumming (for Hosay), St. Vincent (children's game song), and Tobago (a reel). The sound is good and the notes are informative. ~ Don Hill
