Review

"Schmidt rises above the novel's conventions to create memorable and believable characters."

"[S]o much happens I wondered whether all the seeds Schmidt planted could flower by the end. To his great credit, they do."

"Schmidt has a way of getting to the emotional heart of every scene without overstatement, allowing the reader and Holling to understand the great truths swirling around them on their own terms."

First line

Of all the kids in the seventh grade at Camillo Junior High, there was one kid that Mrs. Baker hated with heat whiter than the sun. Me.

Publisher's note

Set during the 1967-1968 school year, Holling Hoodhood finds his seventh-grade year one filled with many challenges as he spends afternoons with Mrs. Baker discussing the plays of Shakespeare, defends his tasty cream puffs from a determined bully, and prepares for his big debut in the school play--all while the issue of Vietnam looms on a daily basis. A Newbery Honor Book & ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Reprint.

Annotation

Set in 1967, this thought-provoking, enjoyable middle-grade novel is about the struggles of seventh-grader Holling Hoodhood, who is forced to read Shakespeare by his teacher, Mrs. Baker, on Wednesday afternoons while all the other kids are in religious instruction. This is just one small part of Holling’s troubles. Bullies, family drama, and tons of embarrassment keep piling up, forcing Holling to figure out where he stands in a very confusing world. The author of this humorous and well-written book is also the author of LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY. A 2008 Newbery Honor Book, this wonderful read is also both a 2007 Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book and a Kirkus Reviews Best Young-Adult Book.
