Title Note

Sometimes, in retrospect, history doesn't tell the full story about a work of art. Though not widely known today, 'Der Freischtz' ('The Freeshooter," or "The Marksman Who Doesn't Need to Aim") was wildly successful in its day, popular beyond all expectations. Despite, or perhaps because of, its lack of musical pretension, the opera spread throughout Europe, playing houses of all sizes.

Today's audiences tend to be a bit more sophisticated, but those who relax and leave expectations behind can still enjoy the music. The magical story, taking place in Bohemia shortly after the Thirty Years' War, is an enchanting tale of a hunter who receives seven magic bullets: six which automatically hit the target of his choosing, one which obeys the will of the devil. This melodramatic tale has the feel of a campfire story, the sort of crowd-pleasing thriller found throughout the dramatic arts.

The remastered 1958 performance brings vigor to this ghostly tale. The sharp sounds of the German lyrics and bombastic melodies blend to create rousing music that hits dramatic moment with a heavy hand. While to some it may seem overwrought, it is the music that won over audiences by the thousands when the opera first debuted. Understand that and today's audience will have the key to enjoying this very fine recording.
