Colorado-based bluegrass quartet Spring Creek's sound bespeaks an intense study of not just original bluegrass pioneers like Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, but also the first generation of progressive bluegrassers, such as New Grass Revival and Hot Rize. Their high-lonesome harmonies and flurries of frenetic mandolin and banjo picking on WAY UP ON A MOUNTAIN show a band that's steeped in tradition, but the energy they bring to these tunes, and their willingness to expand upon the tradition with their new material, offer an image of band that's absolutely of the moment.
