Unlike most other current practitioners of the blues, guitarist-singer Cleveland Fats sticks pretty exclusively to the blues rather than peppering his set with rock, soul, blues ballads and pop songs. His passionate guitar solos and colorful vocals, along with a very good sense of timing and pacing, make The Way Things Go a superior blues set. Fats uses a basic quartet (with one of three keyboardists) and welcomes saxophonist Doc Thomas to six songs and the great veteran guitarist Robert Lockwood, Jr. and Billy Branch on harmonica to four numbers apiece. Tempos and moods change from song to song with an occasional instrumental tossed in for variety. Not only does Cleveland Fats' CD feature music that blues lovers will enjoy, but it is particularly recommended to listeners who think that all of the blues sound alike. ~ Scott Yanow
