Review

Q (9/96, p.113) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The sound throughout is loose and warm; offbeat rhythms strummed on acoustic guitar, with the gaps filled by spare drumming and washes of Hammond organ..."
Melody Maker (7/13/96, p.49) - "...And for some, the adventure never ends....Forster's third solo outing (discounting--and we should--1994's covers LP) finds the plucky pirate's swashbuckling zeal undimmed by age....Still one of our finest fire eaters."

Product note

With his fourth solo album, WARM NIGHTS, Robert Forster returned to the quirky folk/pop that defined his work with the Go-Betweens. That sound had also been evident on his debut solo album, DANGER IN THE PAST, but the intervening two solo projects had moved away, exploring straight-ahead country originals on one and country-tinged covers on the other. While this might seem something of a regression, in Forster's case, it more resembles a rediscovery, a chance to re-examine the past--it even features literal evidence of this in "Rock 'n Roll Friend," a reworking of an old Go-Betweens track. The album is also marked (in a positive way), by the appearance of former labelmate (on the legendary Postcard label) Edwyn Collins, then still riding on the fluky, but wholly deserved, U.S. success of his GORGEOUS GEORGE record. Collins' influence is clearly evident on several tracks, most notably the R&B flavored "Jug of Wine." Other standouts include the melancholy "Snake Skin Lady," which lyrically addresses the memory of a fan from the heyday of the Go-Betweens, and the Kurt Weil-like "Fortress," which adds a tuba to Forster's repertoire. Highly recommended for fans, WARM NIGHTS also makes a good introduction to Robert Forster.
