After being encouraged by his mother to enter a local talent contest, contemporary country singer Jason Michael Carroll was discovered by former Hootie & The Blowfish producer Don Gehman. Impressed by the North Carolina native's long-haired movie star good looks and warm baritone vocals, Arista Records signed Carroll and released his debut disc, WAITIN' IN THE COUNTRY. Powered by the success of the heartbreaking child abuse-themed single "Alyssa Lies," the album shot to number one in its first week of release.
