Title Note

Columbia River's compendium of national anthems from the western hemisphere focuses mainly upon the nations of Latin America. Interestingly, it also includes the national anthem of Spain, the home base for this series, and Portugal; both nations were primary participants in the colonization of the continent during the late 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Played by a wind and percussion ensemble, each of the 22 South and Central American anthems on this collection sounds quite similar to conventional militaristic European anthems. This music exists to be played and heard during official state functions, which emulate European formality; not one shred of any indigenous, African or Caribbean tradition is detectable. As if to reference more than 200 years of North American involvement in the affairs of smaller nations from Mexico and Puerto Rico to Chile and Argentina, this album closes with the "Star Spangled Banner," the national anthem of Los Estados Unidos. ~ arwulf arwulf
