Review

The Wire (p.60) - "[T]he sonics are maximal, with the sound somewhere between the guitar-as-guitar iconoclasm of Dick Dale and Link Wray, the repeat-riff style of The Velvet Underground and Spacemen3 and the whole Asahito Nanjo school of endlessly overloaded fuzz and wah."
Q (Magazine) (p.145) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heirs is a musical nostalgia trip worth taking....'Dance California' wigs out ferociously..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] concise set of hypno-garage grooves that recalled several lysergic avatars without being entirely in hock to anyone."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "'Death's Not Your Friend' features droning organ and tinny, reverberating guitars while 'Space Clothes' is more experimental, with backwards vocals over a pulsating ebb of guitar."

Title Note

It was only a matter of time until the psychedelic revolution filtered its way through San Francisco once again. But by the time experimentalists Wooden Shjips came upon the Bay Area's shores, their version of trance-rock had been filtered through decades of outsider art, noisemaking groundbreakers, and a new breed of sociopolitical apathy that all come teeming through the artful dissonance of VOL. 1. Echo-effected vocals play unwilling narrator to the bizarre m‚lange of garage, Kraut rock, chaotic feedback, and occasional tongue-in-cheek tugs of war with something approximating accessibility. (Dig the presumably knowing "Whole Lotta Love" rip-off riff buried underneath the ironically titled "Dance, California"'s scratching and squalling.) "Shrinking Moon For You" and "Clouds Over Earthquake" do more than upset norms and punish eardrums, setting hypnotically shoegazey waves of rhythm and noise in motion, and hinting that, despite their best efforts, Wooden Shjips might be leaning toward something much more languid in the future.
