Review

Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.174) - "...in [the]...fine, provocative Cleveland-rock tradition: brooding glam coated in smokestack grime, DIAMOND DOGS sabotaged by `Final Solution'-era Pere Ubu."
Alternative Press (9/94, p.66) - "...they love to rub against the better end of `70s rock worship....this band may be the most logical heir to the Peter Laughner-era Pere Ubu to happen along yet..."
Option (11-12/94, p.107) - "...With their pushy beats, thick textures and honestly displayed melodies, the band never sounds defeated or depressed but actually works the music against the words to memorably lively effect..."
NME (Magazine) (11/5/94, p.48) - 7 - Very Good - "...skip merrily between Girls Against Boys style noise into bizarre Television style ballads..."

Title Note

Cobra Verde: John Petkovic (vocals, guitar); Doug Gillard (guitar); Don Depew (bass); Dave Swanson (drums).

Arising from the ashes of Cleveland's beloved '80s avant-glam weirdos Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde distilled their previous band's union of classic glam rock and the art-damaged punk of Pere Ubu and the Fall on this 1994 debut, VIVA LA MUERTE. With equal parts intellect, arty nerve, and straight-up rock-&-roll brutishness, frontman John Petkovic leads the swaggering unit through nine riffy rave-ups (like the opening one-two punch of "Was It Good" and "Gimme Your Heart") that still manage to satiate the band's inner pop jones (the sunny "Montenegro"). The whole album cooks and provides ample justification for Rob Pollard's casting them as Guided By Voices for the MAG EARWHIG album.
