Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.65) - "[W]ith catchier hooks and harder-rocking beats supplied by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, who produced." -- Grade: B
Alternative Press (p.134) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Contemporary emo-pop sensibilities meet '80s party abandon on this record, and neither have sounded so enjoyable in years."
Blender (Magazine) (p.144) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The beats are slick....This is blue-eyed soul with a wink and a dose of manic energy."

Title Note

Cobra Starship: Gabe Saporta (vocals); Ryland Blackinton (guitars); Victoria Asher (keyboard); Alex Suarez (bass guitar); Nate Novarro (drums).

Additional personnel: Travis McCoy, V.I.P..

Cobra Starship's second song, "Guilty Pleasure" tells you almost everything you need to know about the band. Essentially a side-project of Midtown bassist/vocalist Gabe Saporta, the band caught fire as a result of their song "Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)" from the pre-fab cult movie of the same name. The thing is, Cobra Starship doesn't care if they're a guilty pleasure. In fact, they seem to be aiming for just such status. Songs such as "Kiss My Sass" and "Damn You Look Good and I'm Drunk" represent the perfect fusion of both Backstreet and Fall Out boys. "Smile for the Paparazzi" has a clattering electro-funk beat that may as well be from a Gloria Estefan song, and "Angie" could be a lost John Secada track. People with an axe to grind against emo AND pop are going to tear VIVA LA COBRA to shreds, but anyone who ever sang loudly and without shame to pop radio is going to wonder where this album has been all their lives.
