Review

Entertainment Weekly (07/11/03, pp.78-9) - "...Recalls the mood-drenched fog of Galaxie 500 decorated with Byrdsian guitar filligrees....[a] shimmering sound tapestry..." - Rating: B+
Uncut (9/03, p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A pure, delicate pop breeze as evocative of bucolic summer afternoons as anything in the Brian Wilson catalogue..."
Alternative Press (9/03, p.102) - 3 out of 5 - "...Every song is a jewel - pretty, austere and precision-cut..."
CMJ (07/07/03, p.7) - "...Dreamy, subtle melodies....Between shimmering, breezy interludes and the recurring chimes of church bells, singer Alasdair MacLean whispers gently of truth and yearning, carefully treading the line between the real and the surreal..."
Mojo (Publisher) (9/03, p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...[Listeners] will find comfort in the warm surrender of The Clientele's aesthetic, the sweet, curious familiarity that lies in the indistinct and the allusive..."

Title Note

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

The Clientele: Alasdair MacLean (vocals, guitar); Mark Keen (piano, drums); James Hornsey (bass).

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

Even though 2003's THE VIOLET HOUR is the Clientele's second full-length release, it's their first real album, as its predecessor was essentially a singles collection. The band had years of singles and EPs behind them by this time, and had gotten their sound down to a science. Soft, hushed vocals, feather-light drumming, and a gentle rain of reverb-soaked guitar are the tools they use to deliver tunes that sound like they sneaked out of the '60s psych-pop era when no one was looking. P.S.--they're great at it.
