Review

Uncut (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]here are crisp ballads, Stones-style rocker and the odd full-throttle riff..."
Magnet (p.123) - "Stinson reaches musical maturity without aping his pat on VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD."
CMJ (p.48) - "Stinson has never sounded better....Energetic and engaging, VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD is truly refreshing."

Title Note

Personnel: Tommy Stinson (bass instrument); Dave Phillips, Richard Fortus (guitar); Jason Freese (saxophone); Dizzy Reed (keyboards); Gersh, Josh Freese (drums).

Recording information: 03/2003.

Based on his resume, one would assume that former Replacements bassist and second-generation Guns N' Roses member Tommy Stinson knows how to rock. Ironically, 2004's VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD, though undeniably a rock album, owes much more to the singer/songwriter outings of former bandmate Paul Westerberg than it does to the reckless swagger of early Replacements or certain LA hard-rock outfits. The smoky, acoustic "Without a View," the melancholic strummer "OK," and the drum machine-filled title track all show Stinson growing up and trying on different kinds of stylistic shoes.

Those seeking Stinson's pedigree need not fear, however. "Something's Wrong" has requisite rock raunch, and "Couldn't Wait" approximates TIM-era Replacements in its combination of hooks and amped-up energy. Still, the second half of the disc is given to introspective, low-key acoustic songs that bear the influence of Westerberg. Stinson seems comfortable in this mode (except when he breaks out of it to heat things up again with "Motivation"). VILLAGE GORILLA HEAD may disappoint those trying to revisit Stinson's glory days, but for open-eared listeners with a mind to both rock and reflect, this solo outing is sure to intrigue and impress.
