In focusing the spotlight on Gladys Knight, the folks at BEHIND THE MUSIC chose a member of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame whose career began at the age of eight when she won Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour in 1952. In the ensuing decades, Gladys Knight And The Pips bounced between major and independent labels while creating their own rich chapter of soul music.

This compilation kicks off by featuring Gladys Knight's early '60s chart success with covers of Johnny Otis ("Every Beat of My Heart"), Don Covay ("Letter Full of Tears") and Van McCoy ("Giving Up"). The singer's brief Motown stint is represented by a live, sassy version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Upon leaving Berry Gordy's label for Buddah Records in 1973, the Atlanta native's newfound success was appropriately spurred by the chart-topping "Midnight Train to Georgia." Possessed of a strong, bluesy voice seasoned by singing both supper-club and gospel material, Knight showed her extensive range, scoring with the funky Curtis Mayfield-written/produced "On and On" and the live show tune medley "The Way We Were/Try To Remember." Though Gladys Knight had further success in the '80s, this collection captures most of her finest moments.
