Title Note

Personnel includes: Jeri Southern (vocals, piano); Camarata, Ralph Burns (arranger, conductor); E.J. Roland (guitar); Cliff Hills (bass); Lloyd Morales (drums, percussion); Dave Barbour Trio.

Recorded in Hollywood, California between 1951 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews, Gene Lees and Kathryn King.

Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1998, MCA Music Medea Studios).

Veteran jazz producer Orrin Keepnews and Decca Jazz have done aficianados a real service in compiling the early recordings of classic '50s vocalist Jeri Southern. Though trained as a classical singer and pianist, Southern rarely betrays such a "formal" background in these faultless sessions - except perhaps in her refined musical instincts. Indeed, far from sounding like an overwrought diva gone to the other side, Southern's candlelit vocals are nearly too placid at times. Yet they burn with constant feeling, like short prayers offered alone in the dark.

Southern's actual devotion was to the song as written and there are still no better versions of "The Very Thought Of You," "Everytime We Say Goodbye" or "When I Fall In Love." She put up no defenses as a singer--or as a person it seems--except her deep musicality, which never once failed her in a too-short career.
