Stan Getz Artist Snapshot:

Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz possessed a full, luxuriant tone and a highly melodic improvisational sense. Though he produced consistently rewarding music for the duration of his near 50-year career, he achieved the greatest success in the early '60s when he led the American part of the bossa nova explosion. Indeed, this brilliant fusion of jazz and Brazilian rhythms yielded the tune, "The Girl From Ipanema," which became one of the biggest selling jazz records in history.

Stan Getz was known for his silky tenor sax tone and his lyrical improvisational style. Building on the approach of Lester Young, Getz became one of the most significant innovators of his generation. THE VERY BEST OF STAN GETZ highlights classic renditions of standards "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon), "Desifinado," the ever-charming "Girl from Ipanema" and more.

This compilation spans Getz's career from 1952 until 1991 when he recorded what would unfortunately be his final album, PEOPLE TIME. Magnificent performances are heard on all 12 tracks by the legendary tenor man. Getz's version of "My Funny Valentine" is unusually cheerful, avoiding the somber, late-night treatment this tune normally receives. On this track, Getz's solo is bluesy, animated and even, at times, quite witty. In contrast, his ballad playing on Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" and Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes" is quite reflective and murky. Pianists Kenny Barron and Oscar Peterson add great allure to two of the tracks: the latter tearing down the house with his blistering solo on "It Don't Mean a Thing (if it Ain't Got that Swing).
