The '60 tracks on these two CDs from Spain's Disconforme label comprise the most authoritative and representative collection of Carlos Gardel's middle-to-late period music ever released. Labels from Columbia to Nacional to Odeon are represented. Here, folk songs, film music, corridos, arrabals, solo pop hits, theater performances, and recordings of tango all sit side by side. Somewhat frustrating is the lack of discographical information, but, given the fine sound quality of the 24-bit digital transfer, this can be overlooked easily. There is a substantial biography in the liner notes adding both to the legend, and to the factual portrait of the artist~ Thom Jurek
