Publisher's note

An illustrated look at the contemporary English rock band, The Verve, chronicles the four years of reckless hedonism and interpersonal conflicts that preceded their rise to fame with their third album, the critically acclaimed Urban Hymns. Original. IP.

Annotation

The volatile British band The Verve was formed in the early 1990s out of the ashes of the same scene that spawned the Manchester band the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses. Hailing from Wigan, a northern English town, the band coalesced around its lead singer, the charismatic Richard Ashcroft. With nothing more than a positive attitude and the consumption of copious quantities of drugs to fuel its initial attempts at stardom, it managed to secure both a record deal and the approval of the notoriously fickle British music press. However, despite a successful debut album, 1993's A STORM IN HEAVEN, The Verve collapsed under the combined loads of drug abuse and a grueling US tour. The story of its resurrection and eventual conquering of the UK pop charts is told in British music journalist Martin Clarke's THE VERVE: CRAZED HIGHS AND HORRIBLE LOWS, a well-researched biography of the group and its background in the lower middle-class environs of Northern England. Interestingly, Clarke also includes an epilogue in which he reveals the band languishing in the depths of yet another creative trough in its checkered career; the question of whether the Verve will be able to pull through this time is left unanswered.
