Product note

Following BEAT, Bowery Electric's sophomore album, the band's label released a pair of vinyl-only 12-inch remixes, WITHOUT STOPPING and COMING DOWN. VERTIGO is a double CD compilation of most of these remixes, along with a few others. The 18 minutes of Disc One continues the hip-hop experimentation of the preceding album.
Robert Hampson's (of Loop and Main fame) "Chasm Mix" takes "Fear of Flying"'s looped beat track and adds wet, organic pulses. Mark Nicholson's "Black Light (Osymyso Mix)" recasts the track as the ultimate trip-hop excursion. The 56-minute long second disc shifts the focus to ambient mixes (except for the "Immersion Mix" of "Coming Down," which lashes a funky percussive loop to the already existing ambient structure). Highlights are "Without Stopping (Witchman Mix)," a 14-minute sonic exercise that begins as impossibly gentle drum-and-bass before cranking up to a full-on techno beat assault and finally fading away into straight-ahead ambient, and John Tye's "Twisted Science Mix" of "Empty Words." This slowly swells to a hyper-distorted clanging, eventually settling to a soothing mix of distant wave crashes and a sustained organ drone.
