All the time that rapper Phife Dawg spent at the helm of A Tribe Called Quest, he was completely embroiled in the group aesthetic, and that's a good thing. Otherwise, they might never have been able to assemble what amounts to one of the most impressive ouevres in all of what's come to be known as progressive hip-hop. But it seems that Phife's collectivism prevented him from ever exploring his ideas in a solo format--that is, until the release of VENTILATION: DA LP.

On this inspired disc of forward-looking hip-hop, Phife takes the ideas he spawned during his Tribe days to new places. Lyrically, he's still in a class by himself, spinning rhymes with the best of them. But it's the idiosyncratic production touches and unique sense of song structure on VENTILATION that bespeaks the true innovation of which Phife is capable. This disc is recommended not only to fans of Tribe, but to anyone looking for a freshly cut road in the often monochromatic world of hip-hop.
