Fennesz Artist Snapshot:

Vienna- and Paris-based ambient electronic pioneer Christian Fennesz, more often known simply as Fennesz, got his start in the late-'80s Viennese noise-pop group Maische. After experimenting with techno in the early 1990s, Fennesz settled on his trademark approach: diffuse soundscapes built around guitars, synthesizers, and laptops, punctuated with beats and glitch textures, and washed over with waves of white noise. Albums such as 1997 debut HOTEL PARAL.LEL, 2001's ENDLESS SUMMER, and 2004's VENICE earned Frennesz a cult following; through collaborations with Sparklehorse, Jim O'Rourke, British singer David Sylvain, and Mike Patton.

Rolling Stone (p.89) - "VENICE, partly recorded in that Italian city, is a long, silvery swim through its lapping canals and antique majesty, refracted through the water-world classicism of mid-1970s Tangerine Dream and the spatial grace of Brian Eno's first ambient recordings."
Uncut (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - "VENICE manipulates blizzards of static and drone for meditative, occasionally rockish ends, fragments of melody threaded through the abstraction. It's also humanely crafted, with a warmth unusual in the avant-garde."
Magnet (p.115) - "Fennesz reverse-engineers his sounds - found and created - down to a molecular level before rebuilding them into pixelated, undulating waves of emotion."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.111) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[F]ull of murmuring electronic siroccos that ripple with echoes of cello here, ghostly pianos there."

Product note

The follow-up to Fennesz's ENDLESS SUMMER, VENICE dabbles in the delicate, misty atmosphere of its predecessor, and creates a listening experience just as compelling. A glitch artist more concerned with lulling his listeners into dream states than rearranging their neurochemistry, Fennesz balances gorgeous synth textures with idiosyncratic, digitized pulses and bright, hazy melodies. The perfect soundtrack to a meditative stay on a tropical beach--or a similar vacation taken inside one's brain--VENICE should rank high on the must-have list for fans of ambient and experimental electronica.
