Review

"Ms. Niven's descriptions of the place...stay with the reader: the haunting melodies and--poignant language of Appalachia and the wild, hard beauty of the land along the Blue Ridge Parkway..."

"Niven makes some memorable moonspun magic in her rich fiction debut....It's a touching read, funny and wise, like a crazy blend of Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, a less morose Flannery O'Connor and maybe a shot of Hank Williams." (starred review)

Annotation

In Jennifer Niven's fictional debut, which takes place in the Appalachian Mountains just before World War II, 10-year-old Velva Jean Hart has big dreams of becoming a singer at the Grand Ole Opry, a goal which begins to take on the weight of a burden after she promises her dying mother that she will make it. As Velva Jean comes of age, she finds herself more and more distracted from her supposed life's purpose by a delinquent named Harley Bright, who vows to change his renegade ways and become a preacher. When Harley and Velva Jean realize that their dreams directly conflict with one another, they will each have to decide whether to surrender their ambitions or their love.
