Review

"It is about madness, pain, deception, death, obsessive delusory states of mind, cruelty, solitude, imprisonment, and it is a joy to read."

First line

"Horselover Fat's nervous breakdown began the day he got the phonecall from Gloria asking if he had any Nembutals. He asked her why she wanted them and she said that intended to kill herself. She was calling everyone she knew. By now she had fifty of them, but she needed thirty or forty more to be on the safe side."

Publisher's note

Valis, the disorienting and eerily funny centerpiece of Philip Dick's final trilogy that includes The Divine Invasion and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, is part science fiction, part theological detective story--in which God is both missing person and the perpetrator of the ultimate crime.

Valis is the first book in Philip K. Dick's incomparable final trio of novels (the others being are The Divine Invasion and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer). This disorienting and bleakly funny work is about a schizophrenic hero named Horselover Fat; the hidden mysteries of Gnostic Christianity; and reality as revealed through a pink laser. Valis is a theological detective story, in which God is both a missing person and the perpetrator of the ultimate crime."The fact that what Dick is entertaining us about is reality and madness, time and death, sin and salvation--this has escaped most critics. Nobody notices that we have our own homegrown Borges, and have had him for thirty years."--Ursula K. Le Guin, New Republic

Annotation

"VALIS" is the first book in a trilogy that was among the last books that Dick wrote before his death in 1982. It is a fictionalized autobiographical account of a religious experience that Dick believed he had in 1974. In the novel, the author depicts himself as two men, one who is mad, and one who is not, both of whom are involved in their own searches for a missing God.
