Growing up in a staunchly conservative Mormon district of Utah, the members of the Used formed their group as a reaction to the conformity of their home town. The unit's aggressive blend of hardcore and heavy metal proved resolutely unfashionable in the land of the Osmonds, but touring outside the confines of the state brought the band to a wider audience, and they succeeded in landing a major label recording contract with Reprise Records. The quartet's self-titled 2002 debut album was buoyed by the radio success of the single "The Taste Of Ink," and by vocalist Bert McCracken's much publicized romance with Ozzy Osbourne's daughter Kelly. The band continued to refine its potent brand of aggressive modern screamo through a spate of albums in the '00s.
