Annotation

The outsiders and misfits who personify the iconoclastic, creative spirit of rock & roll are given their due in Richie Unterberger's finely detailed series of essays, URBAN SPACEMEN AND WAYFARING STRANGERS. With their only common attributes a restless creativity and an artistic worldview that didn't so much reject the music world's capitalist values as view them as an irrelevance, bands like the Pretty Things (almost universally described by their acolytes as "rawer than the Stones") and the Fugs (a hilariously anarchistic band of radical hippies who recorded for Frank Sinatra's label Reprise and occasionally used Harry Belafonte's backing singers in their albums) produced a wealth of classic material, much of which has been obscured by time. Unterberger also features Giorgio Gomelsky, a seminal figure in the early years of the Rolling Stones who went on to manage the Yardbirds, and Shel Talmy, an American who cheekily parlayed his limited experience as a recording engineer into producing records by the Kinks and the Who. Unterberger's subjects create the overall impression of an unsupervised bunch of kids having the time of their lives until the adults return, in the process producing a wealth of uniquely creative artistic masterpieces.
