THE UP ESCALATOR marked the end of an era for Graham Parker. It was the last album he'd make with The Rumour, who lent strong-but-supple rock-&-roll muscle to his acerbic songs. It was a memorable swan song, though, from the driving "Endless Night," with a guest appearance from Bruce Springsteen, to the infectious "Stupefaction." Parker would go on to make some fine records sans the Rumour, but he'd never again sound as sharp and vital as he did with them on his team.
