Review

Pitchfork (Website) - "[There are] moments of uncommon gorgeousness sprinkled across the album, none more shocking or brilliant than the jazz-tinged guitar solo on 'Cobalt Blue'."

Title Note

The Church: Peter Kappes, Marty Willson-Piper, Steve Kilbey, Tim Powles.

Audio Remasterer: Dan Bartley.

While Australian rockers the Church are best known for their 1980s hits, like "Under the Milky Way," they've shown more staying power than most of their contemporaries. They maintained an active career through the decades, and 2009's UNTITLED #23 finds founding singer/bassist Steve Kilbey and guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes still on board. The band's sound too has remained remarkably consistent, as these tracks are full of same mix of misty, moody atmospheres and '60s-influenced folk-rock jangle that earned the band its initial reputation.

Untitled #23 is a new masterpiece from The Church in my opinion. While every Church band offering produces something really unique and wonderful, this is the first album to come as close to my heart as the much loved PriestAura. Untitled #23 is a real solid collection of songs, each one unique yet belonging together, its a album that will grow with you, it might take a few listens but then all of a sudden youre arrested by it. Two clear favourites of mine that I cherish: the beautiful Operetta, a song that Steve Kilbey sings so movingly and then there’s the atmospheric Sunken Sun with its chiming cowbells tolling in the distance and sounding like a ship’s bell in the mist and Steve Kilbey’s voice really comes into its own. Lunar has drop-dead guitar magic, there’s loads of sparkly guitar on the whole album and Tim Powles great drum rhythms present throughout though I think they’ve swapped instruments at times. I keep hearing comparisons from the Byrds to George Harrison and Pink Floyd (yes, there are echoes in there) but The Church have their own inimitable and distinctive style that just cannot be copied. I found myself stopping still in my tracks to listen to this album with awe every time a magic moment appeared (and there are many on this album). Cant wait for them to tour the States in June (a full electric tour I heard) and show the Americans what we Aussies had to ourselves last month. Happenstance is a sexy number endowed with slide guitar and ebow and the bass line, cello and harp in Pangaea made this a worthy single - both two starters that get you in the groove. Anchorage has dark, dramatic undertones. I think fans will be jumping up and down about this one, and the electric lovers will get to rock out to the dynamic Deadmans Hand (reminder of Roman) and the vibrant Space Saviour. With a nod and a wink, I take my hat off to Kilbey and his band for this amazing collection. Don’t deny yourself the recent eps either - Pangaea ep (also has a song each by Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes) and a 17 minute epic called So Love May Find Me and then the Coffee Hounds ep that bears a great cover of Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love song – it’s a fabulous, extraordinary time to be a Church fan. Music lovers will rejoice, yeah there’s more out there than you can imagine.
