For every Beatles or Stones, there are hundreds of visionary rock groups who remain unsung heroes. From cult figures such as Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett (the most famous musician included here) to virtually undiscovered artists, this behind-the-scenes book with CD of 12 rare songs celebrates some of the best rockers in everything from '50s rockabilly to '9Os post-punk - unknown greats who, for one reason or another, just never made it.

Annotation
The industrious rock writer Richie Unterberger's entertaining tour through some of rock & roll's less frequented pathways, UNKNOWN LEGENDS OF ROCK 'N' ROLL, brings to light a wealth of undiscovered talent. The youthful Los Angeles rockabilly duo the Collins Kids--who displayed a raunchy swing way beyond their years at around the same time that Elvis Presley was shocking the matrons of Mississippi with his pelvic gyrations--share space with the eccentric folk outfit the Holy Modal Rounders, who flourished in New York's Greenwich Village in the mid-1960s and included future playwright and actor Sam Shepard. The doomed British songwriter Nick Drake and Pink Floyd founder and legendary acid casualty Syd Barrett may be better-known than the Long Island garage band the Mystic Tide, which surfaced briefly and psychedelically around 1965. But Unterberger's equal enthusiasm for all his subjects' stories inspires further investigation of acts like the eccentric Martin Newell, John's Children (who included the young Marc Bolan), and would-be British underground revolutionaries the Deviants--all of whom are also included on the book's accompanying CD, a remarkable sonic sampling of some of the highlights of this tribute to rock & roll obscurity.
