Tex-Mex sensations Los Tigres Del Norte have been plying their brand of Norteno music for decades, and UNIENDO FRONTERAS shows no dip whatsoever in quality. If anything, the group's sound seems to have gained in character as the members have grown in age. Far from the crossover manque gaffes of so many Tex-Mex pop groups who employ synthesizers and drum machines that sounded out of date 15 years ago, Los Tigres stick to the real thing. Most of the tracks here are pure, stripped-down conjunto, led by a billowing accordion and galvanized by rhythmic guitar and simple drums. There's nothing extra added to the production beyond what's needed to get the songs across. From the traditional two-step conjunto sound of "Trabajo Por Mi Cuenta" and "Somos Mas Americanos" to the tantalizingly slow waltz "Y Dices Que Tu Me Amas," Los Tigres display an uncommon mastery of their style, led by heartfelt vocals and concise arrangements that make UNIENDO FRONTERAS an unpretentious joy to hear.
