Annotation

In B.S. Johnson's formally innovative and emotionally rich "novel," an unnamed narrator travels to Nottingham to report on a football (soccer) match and recalls a fierce friendship and his friend's eventual death from cancer. The book, equally a study of human relationships and the nature of memory, has a clear first and last chapter, but the other 25 chapters remain unbound and unordered, offering themselves up to readers, like memories themselves, in haphazard and startling discontinuity. Published to acclaim but small readership in 1969, this remarkable book represents Johnson's attempts to find new ways for fiction to represent "truth," via both its unique format and in its blend of autobiographical and fictional elements. The 2008 New Direction reprinted edition contains an introduction by Jonathan Coe.
