Ex-This Mortal Coil member and founder of the seminal 4AD record label, Ivo Watts-Russell is also the leader of the Hope Blister, an ambient pop project with a revolving cast of musicians. UNDERARMS & SIDEWAYS brings together two albums in one package. The first, originally released in 1999, is a series of outtakes from the group's first album ...SMILE'S OK. The second is a remix album that features electronica revisions of UNDERARMS material by Kompakt's Markus Guentner. The music on both discs, which is almost entirely instrumental, is ethereal, moody, often dark, but always compelling. While in keeping with 4AD's indie aesthetic, UNDERARMS & SIDEWAYS is lush, complex, and worthy of repeated listens.
