Review

"[A]n engaging bottom-rung perspective on how rock-and-roll became increasingly corporatized in the late '80s and the '90s."

"[Bill German's] affable account of chasing the world's biggest rock band for the simple reason that there was nothing else he wanted to do....Despite [memorable] anecdotes, though, this book isn't really about the Rolling Stones--it's about being a fan."

Publisher's note

A coming-of-age memoir offers a bittersweet, insider's view of one of the world's greatest rock bands, describing how the group took him under their wing as a teenager, his participation in the band's private jam sessions and world travels, and his witness to their personal crises and over indulgences. 30,000 first printing.

Annotation

Bill German spent 17 years of his life following the coattails of the Rolling Stones, rubbing elbows when he could, grabbing free grub backstage when that's all he could get. He was publishing a "legitimate news publication," too, of course--a fanzine--and for a while got paid enough for that work to do it fulltime. But times changed, and his status amongst the entourage waned. UNDER THE THUMB chronicles German's adventures and missteps, providing glimpses into some of the most banal activities of the rock world and of these lifetime rock-and-rollsters.

This coming-of-age memoir by a fan, friend, and journalist in The Rolling Stones's inner circle tells the unlikely story of how a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn befriended the most notorious rock band in the world and lived to tell about it. b&w photos throughout.
