Annotation

Both Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal pursued similar careers of musical exploration after they started out together in the short-lived band the Rising Sons in the mid-1960s. While they were equally attracted to what is now known as roots music, Cooder's work tended towards a more Caribbean influence, while Taj Mahal, the son of a gospel singing mother from South Carolina and a West Indian jazz pianist father, was deeply influenced by the blues. University professor Fred Metting's commendable comparative study of the two musicians traces their similar middle-class backgrounds, their richly musical childhoods, and their mutual interest in searching out unique musical genres. He also investigates the various musicians from which they drew their inspiration, including the Bahamian guitar player Joseph Spence, the blues singer the Reverend Gary Davis, and the legendary Hawaiian guitarist Gabby Pahinui, as well as genres such as minstrel music, which especially interested Mahal. An absorbing examination of the flexible nature of music and the intriguing effects of musical cross-pollination, THE UNBROKEN CIRCLE is a valuable tool in any serious study of these fascinating American musicians.
