This budget-priced three-CD set collects a broad cross-section of recordings made by guitar ace Tommy Bolin during the 1970s. Though Bolin spent time in both the James Gang and Deep Purple, and also played with fusion drummer Billy Cobham, THE ULTIMATE focuses mainly on solo work, including low-key acoustic recordings and gritty demo and live performances. Not to worry though, sparks still fly throughout, particularly on the tunes from the 1972 Energy album. A rock-&-roll footnote to many, Tommy Bolin is a bona fide guitar hero to shredders in the know, and THE ULTIMATE displays not only his chops on guitar but his versatility as a songwriter and performer.
