Review

Spin (p.64) - Ranked #31 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "[W]illfully flipping from lush to throat-clenchingly raw with every record, and sounding just as convincing either way."
Entertainment Weekly (p.121) - "[S]he returns to the raw, scorched-earth abrasiveness of her first records?.She bashes out primitive blues stomps and metal riffs, strums quietly, and sings like a wounded, wayward siren..." -- Grade: A
Q (p.100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "When Harvey stretches herself things really become interesting....There is much minimalism here - with a Julian Cope-esque twist."
Uncut (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's hard to deny the emotional weight and beauty of Polly's personal, if comparatively uncommercial, sixth album."
CMJ (p.4) - "[E]motional provocateur PJ Harvey models her trademark confessionals on a runway of introspective ballads similar to her work on IS THIS DESIRE?..."
Mojo (Publisher) (pp.99-100) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]here are some fabulous moments from both sides of Harvey's brain, red-clawed rock'n'roll and murky psychosexual narratives."

Title Note

Personnel: PJ Harvey (vocals, various instruments); Rob Ellis (drums, percussion, background vocals); Mr. Head, Evelyn Isaac (background vocals).

Recording information: 2004.

A clear departure from STORIES FROM THE CITY, STORIES FROM THE SEA, 2004's UH HUH HER finds Polly Jean Harvey forgoing the poppier touches of the relatively refined former album in favor of a stripped-down, no-frills record. Aside from the presence of longtime drummer Rob Ellis, this is essentially a one-woman show, with Harvey playing all other instruments and producing every song.

Many tracks on UH HUH HER are so spare that they might be mistaken for demos, and this minimalism works in the album's favor. "Shame" and "Pocket Knife" both consist of little more than a steady beat and subtle instrumentation, but they allow Harvey's bold, emotive voice to come to the fore. Harvey's signature sense of menace shows up on a number of songs, including the lumbering "The Life & Death of Mr. Badmouth" and the dynamic "The Letter." However, the album's most notable track may be "The Slow Drug," which floats along on a faint keyboard line, fading in and out like a half-remembered dream. Though it may seem like a sonic retreat, UH HUH HER reaffirms Harvey's status as one of rock's most unpredictable artists.
