Review

CMJ - "[T]hey have added cymbals and a real saxophone, attributes that suggest that there is actual flesh and blood involved, while sacrificing none of their analog magnetism."

Title Note

Yip-Yip: Brian Esser, Jason Temple (various instruments).

Just as the Ramones tried to recreate the sound of their youth--and in the process re-imagined it--so do Orlando, Florida's instrumental keyboard punks Yip-Yip on their fifth album, TWO KINGS OF THE SAME KINGDOM. The primary difference is that Yip-Yip's Brian Esser and Jason Temple spent their youths locked in the den playing Metroid. But not everything here sounds like music for playing Nintendo--the quasi-ska time signature and presence of what sounds like a real saxophone on "High Heel to Mammal IV" recalls early Madness. Still, most of the songs, such as the spiraling "Gender Changes" and "Club Mummy," which conjures the background music to an imagined Mummy video game, make you want to reach for your controller.
