Review

Q (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[This album] emphasizes Adam Stephens's formidable gifts as a lyricist, convincingly conjuring up a mythical past where death and damnation are always close at hand."
Uncut (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] gleefully malevolent testament to the cathartic joys of furious, poison-flecked songwriting."
Alternative Press (p.172) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Their take on Delta blues and twisted folk is continually spot-on, going down equally well with a bad breakup or a cold beer with pals."

Title Note

Two Gallants: Adam Fontaine (guitar); Hyde Edneud (drums).

Additional personnel: Anton Patzner (violin); Jackie Perez Gratz (cello).

The rumpled, downcast folk-blues that comes out of this young duo bears both timeless backwoods mustiness and all the poetry-spouting fireworks of youth. On their third album, they don't mess too much with the formula that made them one of the more celebrated indie acts of the early aughts, but Adam Stephens's splintery voice has been sanded down a little, approximating a soulful Rick Danko yowl, and, lo-fi no more, the production here is warm, full, and forgiving.

The mood of this reputed end-of-a-romance album is somber and has a preponderance of beautiful ballads like "Trembling of the Rose" and "The Hand that Held Me Down," but spirits are lifted slightly with the rueful yet jaunty anti-nationalist screed "Miss Meri." As always, drummer Tyson Vogel grounds Stephens's flights of lyrical fancy with his rock-steady hand.
