Title Note

Personnel: Lil Rob (rap vocals); Carmen San Diego (vocals); Mr. J, Jimmy Castro (rap vocals).

Lil Rob built up a name for himself hustling on smaller labels for years before his 2002 Upstairs Records debut THE ALBUM. After three years he followed that with TWELVE EIGHTEEN PART 1, an engrossing record overflowing with charm and hooks. On a bonus track, the Chicano rapper proclaims of his style: "it's feel good music, real good music, real hood music." That's not a bad description of an MC who creates catchy tracks that tend to balance a disarming, cordial vibe with an indisputably raw credibility.

TWELVE EIGHTEEN PART 1 was preceded by breakthrough hit "Summer Nights," a breezy jam conjuring up the fun, mellow vibe of overheated summertime parties. That tune is here, along with tracks that represent Lil Rob's versatility, like the classic West Coast hardcore of "Superbad," and the bass-heavy and inventively produced "Playground." Lil Rob finishes with the reflective "I'm Still Here," featuring a soulful sample from 1960s singer Barbara Mason and a doo-wop-inflected chorus, sending this satisfying album out on a lingering, memorable note.
