Title Note

Personnel includes: Suzanne Ciani (piano); Chyi-Yu (vocals); Teva Bell (guitar); Steven Kindler (violin); Matt Eackle (flute); Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn); Michael Manring (bass); John Hernandez (drums).

TURNING was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.

If the grand, stadium-sized sounds of John Tesh and Yanni are your bag, the music of Suzanne Ciani might throw you for a loop. Though she's a keyboardist composer whose mostly instrumental music is rooted in the romantic new-age vein, Ciani observes a much more organic aesthetic than the aforementioned musicians. Though Ciani's well-versed in the dynamics of the synthesizer, you'll find no pulsing, sequenced melodies or electronic rhythms on TURNING. The very human musicians who support her keyboard work offer sensitive and dynamic accompaniment. The pageantry of the Tesh/Yanni axis is absent from Ciani's sound as well. The compositions here are rendered like lush watercolors, ethereal and subtle, but nevertheless emotive and vivid. TURNING might sound out of place performed live at the Acropolis, but that's probably just as Ciani would have it.
