Not to be confused with the 1967 Mercury soundtrack LP of the same name, TURN ON, TUNE IN , DROP OUT is the first available CD version of Dr. Timothy Leary's original 1966 spoken-word LP on ESP-Disk. In a low-key, quasi-hypnotic voice that's soothing and disturbing in equal measures, Dr. Leary hawks his message of raised consciousness through psychoactive drugs in a persistent and persuasive fashion. But is this album anything more than a camp '60s artifact nearly 50 years after the fact? Whether or not a contemporary audience is truly open to Leary's message, one can't deny that TURN ON is a genuine meditative experience, not far removed from similar recordings by fellow gurus like Alan Watts or Baba Ram Dass.
