Title Note

This album from Ocora's endless vaults of ethnic music is a studio recording of sacred music from Sufism. The music by itself (without religious context, etc.) leaves much to be lacking. The chants and ney (flute) playing are both well performed, but rather simple and slow-paced. The full instrumentation of the pieces consists of voice, ney, and tar (frame drum). Together, there is little to please the ears without at least a basic understanding of the language in use (so as to understand the poetry). There are also taksim performances on the album -- classical improvisations on the ney. The playing of the flute can be found relatively soothing, but for most, it may be simply irritating. ~ Adam Greenberg
