Neil Sedaka Artist Snapshot:

In the late-1950s/early-'60s Neil Sedaka was part of the compositional Camelot that was New York's Brill Building songwriters stable, penning hits for Connie Francis, Tom Jones, and others. It wasn't long before he began recording his own compositions and scoring hits for himself. In the '70s, a more mature Sedaka made a major comeback with a more sophisticated, Adult Contemporary sound, racking a batch of new chart-toppers. Others hit big with tunes around that time as well, such as the Captain & Tennille with "Love Will Keep Us Together."

In the 2000s, Neil Sedaka finally enjoyed an inevitable pop-cultural reassessment, but a decade earlier, before he started palling around with Fountains of Wayne et al., he was busy reasserting his claim on musical history via 1995's TUNEWEAVER. The album finds the Brill Building hitmaker-turned-'70s-MOR-star re-recording most of his biggest hits from across his entire career. Some of Sedaka's early-'60s pop classics get a faithful reworking, including "Calendar Girl," "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen," and other such perennial jukebox gems. On the other hand, "Breaking Up is Hard To Do," whose original version and slower '70s remake were both hits for Sedaka, gets yet another reinvention, this time as an orchestrated, Sinatra-style saloon song. It's not all a hit parade, though; there are some lesser-known items here to balance things out, offering listeners a considered overview of Sedaka's work that's not quite a greatest-hits package.
