Though spanning several years and projects, the selections nonetheless congeal as a coherent whole, thanks to the consistent elements of Smith's gonzo falsetto, gospel influences, Christian-themed lyrics, and overall nuttiness. TRYING HARTZ also features guest work from outside the bloodline, including Sufjan Stevens and Chris Palladino, and production from Steve Albini and others. In addition, eight tracks showcase Smith and his family performing live--where some fans would argue they best thrive.
