Nikki Sudden Artist Snapshot:

As one half of the creative force behind the Swell Maps, Nikki Sudden was an important figure in England's post-punk movement of the late '70s/early '80s. After the dissolution of the band, Sudden would go on to record as a solo artist and as the frontman of the Jacobites. Where the Swell Maps blended a jangly D.I.Y. primitivism with noisy gestures to the avant-garde, Sudden's solo work indulged his love of the Rolling Stones, T. Rex, and other swaggering rock icons. His music--by turns tough and tender--made fans out of, among others, Evan Dando, Sonic Youth, Jeff Tweedy, and R.E.M. Sudden died in his sleep in 2006 at the age of 49, less than a decade after his brother Epic Soundtracks took his own life.

Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "His old influences are all here -- the Stones, t.Rex -- yet there's also a '70s disco flavour on tracks such as 'Seven Miles High'."

Title Note

Personnel: Nikki Sudden (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Einar Stenseng (guitar, keyboards); Darrell Bath (guitar); Sanni Baumgartner (glockenspiel); John Clifford Barry (bass guitar); Stephane Doucerain, John Rivers, Danny Hole (drums); Phil Freeborn (hand claps); Barbara Massacci (unknown instrument).

Recording information: Berlin, Germany (2005 - 2006).

From the Swell Maps and Jacobites to his own recent solo work, Nikki Sudden has never made a less than great record. His long and woefully undervalued career places him in the pantheon of gifted British oddballs like Marc Bolan and Syd Barrett along with his contemporaries Robyn Hitchcock and Julian Cope. THE TRUTH DOESN'T MATTER, his second "comeback" record for Secretly Canadian and, unfortunately, his final statement, finds Sudden picking up where 2004's TREASURE ISLAND left off: discovering the missing link between Barrett's druggy mysticism and the swaggering Brit rock of the Faces and Mott the Hoople.
