Zakarya: Alexandre Wimmer (guitar, electronics); Yves Weyh (accordion); Vincent Posty (bass guitar); Pascal Gully (drums).

As there have been resurgences of interest in the genres of rockabilly and Western swing, so there was (and continues) a revival of klezmer. It evolved amid the folk music of Central and Eastern European Jews and flourished in the immigration to America, where it mixed with pop music and (especially) early jazz. Klezmer spread to Europe as well--Zakarya is a French klezmer band. While some bands lean towards a traditional approach, Zakarya mixes the familiar, lively folk melodies and spry rhythms with the audacious aggression of rock-metal. Their second disc for the Tzadik label, TRUE STORY, is an inspired though somewhat irreverent tribute to Martin Behaim, an astronomer/navigator who was one of the first to map the world with a global concept.
