One of the founding bands of Scotland's fertile indie-rock scene, the Pastels took the DIY aesthetic of punk, and combined it with their love of 1960s pop, resulting in a naive, off-key sound that charmed some and left others scratching their heads. Like the Vaselines, the band, fronted by Stephen Pastel (born Stephen McRobbie), never appealed to more than a small, devoted following, but those discerning listeners were treated to wonderfully quirky indie-pop gems such as the jangly "Crawl Babies" and the wistful "Nothing to Be Done," both of which appear on this well-selected retrospective of the group's late-'80s/early-'90s incarnation. While the Pastels are often overlooked, their influence can be heard in better-known peers, such as Jesus & Mary Chain and Teenage Fanclub, and younger acolytes as well, most notably the Delgados and Belle & Sebastian.
