One of the unsung heroes of roots reggae, Bim Sherman possessed one of the purest vocals in the music's history. Fiercely independent to the end, Sherman largely sidestepped the Jamaican studio system, preferred to record only his own songs and cut self-released efforts whenever finances allowed. As a result, much of Sherman's catalog is scattered in ultra-scarce editions on his own seven-inch imprints: Scorpio, Sun Dew, and Red Sea. TRIBULATION: DOWN IN JAMDOWN is a selection of some of the rarest, most sought-after records from Sherman's creative peak (between 1974 and 1979). Steeped in the solid vocal harmony accompaniment of artists such as the Gladiators, Dr. Alimantado, and Hugh Mundell, Sherman's distinctively buoyant lilt sounds at once defiant and vulnerable, as in the roots anthem "Ital West." Backed by reggae mainstays Roots Radics in particularly fine form, TRIBULATION is an essential collection of one of reggae music's underappreciated figures.
