This collection of Native American flute music offers an excellent sampling of works by the genre's most prominent artists. Extensive liner notes explain the different tribal sources, which include Navajo, Ute, Mandan, and Kiowa-Apache. TRIBAL WINDS shows the true creative range of flute music, featuring both traditional and more modern approaches. William Gutierrez's "Song for the Grandfather" is operatic solo flute in the traditional style, while R. Carlos Nakai favors a more innovative sound in "Covenents Shared" with William Eaton. In addition to the obvious emphasis on flute, other elements include spoken word, percussion, and sounds from nature, as on Joseph Fire Crow's "Creator's Prayer."
