In an era when many male country singers either come off as jingoistic reactionaries or mawkish treacle peddlers, it's refreshing to come across someone like Trent Willmon. On his self-titled debut album, Willmon amiably avoids both of these pitfalls, instead suggesting some contemporary cross between Jerry Reed (minus the guitar wizardry), Roger Miller, and Don Williams. Willmon has no axe to grind; as exemplified by such humor-laden, good-time cuts as "Beer Man" and the imposingly titled "Dixie Rose Deluxe's Honky Tonk, Feed Store, Gun Shop, Used Car, Beer, Bait, BBQ, Barber Shop, Laundromat," his raison d'etre is taking pleasure in life's little quirks, never taking anything too seriously. Even when he tones down the clowning and gets serious, Willmon never comes off as overwrought, merely a plainspoken man offering simple, honest sentiments that make him seem as familiar as your next-door neighbor.
